How to install VMWare video drivers for prerelease Windows 8

This is my guide on how to install VMWare video drivers for prelease Windows 8.

You'll need:

  • The drivers which are available on my download page on here

  • A Windows 8 prerelease build running on VMWare Workstation 9.x and up (if using 10.x or later, use 9.x hardware compatibility mode for the VM)

First, go to the download page on this website and find "VMWare drivers for prelease Windows 8. Clicking the get it button will take you to an Internet Archive link.

From there, download the ISO that matches your build's architecture. I'm using the x86 ISO for this tutorial because I'm using 7850 Enterprise. This is what it looks like.

IMPORTANT: Before the next step, double-check if your VM's hardware compatibility is set to 9.x!

After that, start up your Windows 8 beta VM and select the driver ISO for the CD drive like in this photo:

On the VM, press Win+R and type in devmgmt.msc.

When you're there, right-click on "Base System Device" and click "Update Driver Software".

You'll get this after:

Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".

Go to "Browse" and scroll down until you find "Computer". Click it along with the CD that appears after you click Computer and then select the "VMCI" folder.

Click "Next" and it should be up and ready.

Scroll up until you find "Display adapters". Click it and then do the same procedure as the VMCI folder but select the "SVGA 7.14.01.1233" folder. On an earlier build (like 7850), it will ask you to restart the VM when the install completes.

Restart the VM and then choose an Aero theme. If you get the Aero transparency, then you're all done. Congrats!
